What is an LED Ceiling Light?

LED ceiling light is a type of light fixture that is mounted on the ceiling, they’re ideal in spaces with limited height or without a drop ceiling, such as bedrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms. They provide general illumination to the space and can come in a variety of styles, sizes, and shapes. The most common ceiling light style is the round shape architectural ceiling light. While the other types of ceiling lights include chandeliers, pendant lights, flush mount lights, and track lighting. Ceiling lights can be used in residential and commercial settings and are often a key element in the overall design and ambiance of a space.

Why do you need ceiling lights?

LED ceiling lights are important for providing general illumination in a room, especially in areas where natural light is limited. They can be used to create ambiance and highlight specific areas or objects in a room. Additionally, they can improve safety by illuminating dark corners and preventing accidents. And they’re easy to install and require minimal maintenance. Overall, LED ceiling lights are energy-efficient and long-lasting, making them a cost-effective lighting solution for homes and commercial spaces.

LED Ceiling Lights: Why are they so popular?

  1. Versatility: LED ceiling lights come in various styles and sizes, making them suitable for different types of spaces and interior designs. They have a round shape and square shape, and their colors can be white, black, or any other favorite colors.
  2. Illumination: LED Ceiling light provides overhead illumination that can brighten up a room and create a comfortable and inviting atmosphere. Depending on your room size, they have various wattage options to produce the exact illumination required.
  3. Functionality: LED ceiling lighting can be dimmable and CCT changeable, it allows you to adjust the color temperature from 3000K, 5000K, and 6000K. And you can dim the light from 0 to 100% brightness, allowing you to create different moods and ambiance in a room. Most of the ceiling lights also support remote control, making them more convenient to use.
  4. Space-saving: Surface-mounted ceiling lights are mounted on the ceiling, which means they don’t take up any floor or wall space, making them ideal for smaller rooms. And because of their slim design, it just looks like they’re incorporated into the ceiling and therefore don’t interfere with the space design.
  5. Energy-efficient: LED ceiling lights use LED (light-emitting diode) technology to produce light, they consume less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs, making them a cost-effective and eco-friendly lighting option. And also some dimmable ceiling lights are able to adjust brightness, which further reduces power consumption when operating at lower brightness.
  6. Easy installation: Ceiling lamps are quite easy to install and can be done by a professional or DIY enthusiast. They do not need complicated wiring and special tools, installation is quick and straightforward.

Overall, LED ceiling lights are popular because they offer practical and aesthetic benefits that can enhance the look and feel of any space.

Things to consider when purchasing LED ceiling lights

  • Size of the room

The size of your room will determine how much wattage of light you need. Basically, ceiling light wattages range from 15w to 50w which are suitable for different room sizes. As a general rule of thumb, a 100-square-foot room would require around 1,000-1,200 lumens or 10-12 watts of LED light. A larger room would require more lumens or watts to adequately light the space. For example, A typical bedroom ranging from 100 to 250 square feet (9 to 23 square meters) can be lit up by 12 – 30w ceiling lights. And the bathroom ranging from 35 to 100 square feet (3 to 9 square meters) can be lit up by a 10 – 15w ceiling light fixture. This is a rough calculation as it also depends on the ceiling height and luminous efficiency.

  • Compare the style

A ceiling light that clashes with the existing home style can create a sense of inconsistency and disrupt the overall design scheme. It can make the space feel disjointed and unbalanced. Therefore, the style of the LED ceiling light should be chosen based on the room’s decor and the desired aesthetic. Generally, a good ceiling light should complement the existing home style and not clash with it. A ceiling light that complements the existing home style can enhance the overall aesthetic appeal of the space. It can create a cohesive and harmonious look that is pleasing to the eye.

  • Drop Ceiling or Concrete Ceiling

It’s important to know what is the ceiling type of the room, as it directly affects the light installation. If it’s a drop ceiling, then you need to select the recessed ceiling light fixtures. When you’re choosing the recessed lighting, make sure that the cutting hole size of the ceiling match with your ceiling light. If it’s a concrete ceiling, that goes with the surface-mounted ceiling lights.

  • Waterproofing

For the areas like bedrooms and living rooms, the ordinary ceiling light without a waterproof function should be fine. Since these areas will not have water or moisture get inside the ceiling and enter into the light. But, for bathrooms, kitchens, or any damp, humid places, the ceiling light fixtures must be with waterproof function or at least moisture-resistant. so that they can withstand these conditions and ensure safe operation. The waterproof ceiling light should be with an IP rating of IP44, IP54, and IP65.

  • Dimmable or Non-dimmable

By default, LED ceiling light is non-dimmable, it just gives off a certain amount of brightness based on the wattage level. You cannot dim the light if you find it too bright, so it requires you to calculate the exact brightness you need and then choose the suitable luminaire. If you want to be able to adjust the brightness of the light, then choose the dimmable ceiling light. With dimming capability, you can dim the light via a remote or wall switch.

  • Color Temperature

Choosing the right color temperature is important as it greatly affects our daily life and work. For bedrooms, it is recommended to use warm white or soft white light with a color temperature between 2700K and 3000K. This color temperature creates a cozy and relaxing atmosphere, which is ideal for sleeping and resting.

For bathrooms, cool white or daylight light between 4000K and 5000K is the best. This color temperature provides a bright and energizing light that is suitable for grooming and applying makeup.

For a living room, color temperature can be between 2700K to 6000K from warm white to cold white. It is also important to consider the color of the walls, furniture, and decor in the room when choosing the color temperature. A warmer color temperature can complement warmer tones in the room, while a cooler color temperature can complement cooler tones.

Ultimately, the choice of color temperature depends on your personal preference and the intended use of the space. The good thing is there are 3 CCT ceiling lights that you can adjust the color from 3000k to 6000k, so worry no more about choosing the wrong color.
