What are underwater pool lights and their features?
Underwater pool lights are specially designed lighting fixtures built to submerge in water, typically in swimming pools or spas. These lights are compact, elegant, and visually appealing. They are often constructed with materials like stainless steel and glass, with stainless steel variants such as 201, 304, and 316 chosen based on specific usage requirements.
Currently, there are two main production processes for stainless steel underwater light bodies: stretch molding (generally resulting in thinner and lighter fixtures, with a quick production cycle and lower cost) and silicone sol wax removal (typically leading to heavier, thicker fixtures, with a longer production cycle and relatively higher cost). Some high-end fixtures are made of solid copper, while a few low-end ones may be crafted from zinc alloy, resin casting, tempered glass, or other materials. Stainless steel offers excellent rust resistance, while resin provides waterproofing capabilities.
Underwater pool lights feature the following specs:
- Light Source: Currently, LED lights are the standard choice, ranging from small LEDs like 0.06W, 1W, 3W, and RGB, to high-power LEDs.
- Power Supply: According to international standards, voltage must be strictly controlled below human-safe levels such as 12V, 24V, etc.
- Colors: Pool lights come in a range of colors including cool white, warm white, neutral white, red, green, yellow, blue, and multicolor options.
- Control Methods: Constant illumination, built-in MCU for internal synchronization, SPI cascade control, and DMX512 for external parallel control.
- Installation Types: LED underwater lights can be installed as surface-mounted (using brackets), recessed (buried), or as mid-hole water feature lights (for fountains).
- Protection Rating: The lights typically have an IP68 waterproof rating.
How to choose a good swimming pool light?
As a manufacturer of various underwater lighting, we have a deep understanding of producing high-quality pool and spa lights. To help you choose a good swimming pool light, we’ve summarized several key factors for your consideration.
1. Surface Material of the Light Fixtures
The surface material of the light fixtures should be made of 1.4571 stainless steel. In environments with higher salinity or warmer saltwater, it may even be necessary to use 1.4539 alloy steel. The surface with electro-polishing treatment can further enhance corrosion resistance. Contrary to popular belief, stainless steel can still rust and discolor, especially when the surface treatment is inadequate. Additionally, it is essential to use appropriate stainless steel for the mounting components of the light fixtures and other parts like electrical connectors.
3. Housing for Pool Light Embedded Parts
The housing for the embedded parts of the underwater pool lights should have flexible piping connections leading outside the pool. It is important that the connections for both electrical wires and pipes are waterproof. Without waterproof connections between the wires and pipes, there is a risk of siphoning even if the pipes are positioned above the water level.
2. Light Fixture Structure
When it comes to the structure of light fixtures, the wiring connections inside the fixtures must be waterproof, ensuring that water is blocked from entering the fixtures even if the wires are damaged. The gaskets between the glass and the light body should be made of aging-resistant silicone material. Besides, LED electronic screens need to be safeguarded with a protective conformal coating.
4. Choosing the Light Output of Light Fixtures
When choosing the light output for pool fixtures, it’s essential to consider the ambient light conditions and the size of the pool. CCool white light with a higher color temperature has a lower absorption rate in water compared to warm white light. This is because, after one meter of light penetration in water, blue light is absorbed by 5%, green light by 3%, and red light by 16%. For light penetration rates at different distances, please refer to the table below:
| Distance to the Fixture | 2 meters | 4 meters | 6 meters | 8 meters | 10 meters | 12 meters |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Blue Light % | 90 | 81 | 74 | 66 | 60 | 54 |
| Gree Light % | 94 | 89 | 83 | 78 | 74 | 69 |
| Redl Light % | 71 | 50 | 35 | 25 | 17 | 12 |
| White Light % | 89 | 80 | 72 | 66 | 61 | 56 |
Therefore, using cool white LED lights has two advantages: higher LED light efficiency and lower absorption in water. For rectangular pools of different widths, approximate recommended values for the required luminous flux of LED pool lights are as follows:
| Swimming Pool Width | 4 meters | 8 meters | 12 meters | 25 meters |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lighting Luminous Flux | 1500 lumen | 3000 lumen | 5000 lumen | 10,000 lumen |
The cables used must be specialized underwater wires that can match the copper core diameter specified by the pool light manufacturer. If the fixtures do not come with cables (to allow for more flexible cable length), make sure to seal the connection parts following the factory’s recommendations. The same requirements apply to junction boxes and waterproof-sealed wiring systems.
The best situation is when the wiring is already connected to the light fixtures at the factory, which means you need to specify the wire length when ordering the lights. To achieve a more noticeable underwater lighting effect based on the above-mentioned values, it’s suggested to keep the lighting intensity in the pool environment below 100 lux. For rectangular pools, for a more evenly distributed light, it’s a good idea to install the lights on both sides of the longer edges, with a 90-degree beam angle, and spacing between lights roughly half the width of the pool.
When it comes to maintaining a pool, you may find yourself needing to lower the water level or even empty the pool at times. However, pool owners need to remember that many high-power underwater lights need to rely on the water to help keep them cool.
