What is the difference between LED track light and Magnetic track light?

LED track lights and magnetic track lights are both popular lighting options, but they differ in terms of their technology and installation methods. Here are some key differences between the two:

1. Technology:

LED track lights refer to lighting fixtures that use Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) as the light source. These lights are designed to be installed on a track rail system, which are normally 4 wires, 5 wires and 6 wires rail. Magnetic track lights are a type of track lighting system where the light fixtures are magnetically attached to the track. These fixtures can be easily moved and repositioned along the track thanks to the magnetic connection.

2. Installation:

LED track lights are installed onto a track system using traditional methods such as twisting or clipping the fixtures into place. They may require tools for installation and adjustment. Magnetic track lights feature a unique installation method where the light modules are magnetically connected to the track. This allows for tool-free installation and easy repositioning of the fixtures.

3. Flexibility:

LED track lights come in a variety of styles and designs, offering flexibility in terms of aesthetics and lighting effects. However, adjusting the position of the fixtures may require some effort. Magnetic track lights provide greater flexibility in adjusting the position and direction of the light modules along the track. The magnetic connection makes it easy to move and rearrange the fixtures as needed.

4. Ease of Use:

LED track lights are straightforward to install but may require more effort to adjust once installed. Magnetic track lights are designed for easy installation and repositioning, allowing users to quickly adjust the lighting layout without the need for tools.

5. Different voltage:

LED track lights operate at line voltage, which is typically 220/120v in residential settings or 120-277 volts (V) in commercial settings. Line voltage systems do not require a transformer for operation. Magnetic track lights may often operate at low voltage levels 24V or 48V due to the safety and flexibility benefits of low-voltage systems.

What should you consider when choosing magnetic track lights?

When choosing a magnetic track light system, several factors must be considered to ensure the lighting solution meets your specific requirements and preferences. Here are some key considerations:

  • Confirm the Lighting Design Pattern

The popular magnetic track lighting patterns are linear layout, L-shape layout, square shape layout, and special circular layout. Linear track lights feature a straight track with various light fixtures arranged in a linear pattern. They provide uniform illumination and are suitable for lighting longer spaces or creating a clean, contemporary look. L-shape track lights consist of two intersecting tracks forming an L-shape. This design pattern is ideal for corner installations or spaces where lighting needs to be directed in multiple directions. Square track lights feature a square-shaped track with light fixtures positioned at each corner. Square tracks provide a structured and geometric design pattern, often used in modern and minimalist interiors such as living rooms. Round tracks offer a symmetrical and visually appealing layout, suitable for spaces where a centralized lighting source is desired.

Magnetic Track Lighting Layout Pattern

  • Evaluate the Ceiling Type

It’s essential to evaluate the type of ceiling in the installation area because different ceiling types can impact the mounting and installation of the track lights. For flat ceilings, surface-mounted magnetic track rail can be easily mounted flush against the ceiling, allowing for a seamless and clean look. When installing recessed track rails on a drop ceiling, consider the weight of the fixtures and ensure that the track rail can be securely attached to the ceiling grid or suspended using appropriate mounting hardware.

  • Select the Magnetic Light Driver

When installing magnetic track lighting systems that require converting 220V AC to DC 24V or DC 48V for safety reasons, it’s essential to use a dedicated power supply to prevent the risk of electric shock. The two main types of power supplies (LED drivers) commonly used for magnetic track lights are the external power supply and the built-in power supply.

An external power supply is a separate unit located outside the lighting fixture or track. It is typically mounted remotely, away from the track or fixtures, and connected to the track lights through wiring. It’s easier to access for maintenance and troubleshooting. While the built-in power supply is sucked inside the track rail like a track light module, it’s a space-saving design and simplified installation with fewer visible components, and the eliminate the need for external wiring or drivers.

Before installing track light modules, calculate the total wattage of the modules that will be connected to the power supply. Ensure that this total wattage does not exceed 80% of the power supply’s capacity. For example, if the driver is 100W, the total wattage of the light modules connected to it should be 80W or less. More than the wattage for extended periods can lead to overheating and reduced efficiency, potentially affecting the performance and longevity of the driver components.

  • Choose the Accessories/Connectors

The flexibility and versatility of magnetic track lighting systems are enhanced through various track accessories that allow for different splicing configurations. The track connectors include the straight connector and corner connector, also known as the “I connector” and “L connector”. I connector allows for a seamless connection between two linear sections of track. It enables a continuous flow of lighting along a linear path without interruptions. While L connector empowers the track to bend around corners smoothly, allowing for the illumination of different areas within a space without the need for complex wiring or installation.
