Statistics show that over 70% of people spend more than 6 hours a day working in the office. To stay productive under long working time, choosing proper office light is critical to concentration and reduction of stress. According to the ILO, improved lighting resulted in a 10% increase in productivity and a 30% reduction in errors.

The best office lighting can not only improve the appearance of the office but also relieve eye fatigue and reduce errors. Improvements in lighting do not necessarily mean that you need more lights to make the space brighter. It is often a case of making better use of existing lights and ensuring that lights are positioned correctly for each task. For this purpose, LED linear office lighting is an ideal solution for commercial office applications.

What are the benefits of using LED linear lighting?

LED linear lights are with neat and stylish designs. They can be shaped at will, and by installing them with other lamps together, LED linear light is conducive to creating a magnificent office space.

Depending on the actual installation needs, their lengths can be customized or self-Cut according to the site requirements. No need to worry about the corner areas or edge areas are without suitable fixtures to fit. Additionally, with the help of connectors, LED linear lights can achieve seamless connection to form a continuous run lighting effect or can create different patterns for the space. More importantly, installation is easy and quite flexible.

Thanks to their linear elements, LED linear lights can not only provide general lighting but also divide the office space by outlining the interior building. This enriches the space atmosphere and creates different visual effects, thus making your office or working areas more aesthetic.

What to look for when choosing linear office lighting?

  • Higher luminous flux and bigger width

As we all know, led linear lighting needs to have a higher luminous flux in order to provide sufficient brightness. But if the size is too small, it will result in an overly bright surface, which is likely to cause severe glare. Therefore, when you choose linear light to serve as general lighting, opt for light with a bigger size, especially with a large luminous surface.

For example, our linear light series have several widths options, the narrowest luminous surface is 32mm, the wider one is available from 38mm to 120mm, and the widest luminous surface can be up to 200mm.

  • Uplight and downlight

Combine Indirect lighting with direct lighting. Most linear lights are directing light which is a downlight design. Direct lighting can illuminate the floor areas brightly but the ceiling areas are not lit. This kind of contrast will cause eye strains and severe headaches, and all these problems will eventually lead to low productivity. To avoid this problem, choose the linear light with both downlight and uplight design, that the top of the linear fixture is with an LED strip to light up the ceiling. The combination of uplight and downlight can lower the brightness contrast and comfort the eyes.

  • Aesthetics

One of the main reasons for choosing linear lighting for offices is aesthetics. It is easy to see why LED linear lighting has gained traction quickly in recent years since everyone is tired of old CAT 2 light fittings.  LED linear lighting profiles are typically made of anodized aluminum and powder-coated in a set of colors. Make sure you consider other finishes than powder coating in order to make your LED linear stand out from the crowd. Wood, industrial metals, and other natural materials are all finishes that are making a serious presence in LED linear lighting.

  • Light Color and CRI

LED Linear lights offer a large range of color temperatures, from warm white to cold white, different temperatures can be used to create mood and atmosphere in a space. For office lighting, neutral white (4000K) is recommended as it provides the most comfortable environment for general tasks. Whereas for hotel lighting, warmer yellow (3000K) tends to be better. Besides the light color, CRI is usually overlooked. The higher the CRI, the more true color you can see. Ra≥80 is the least requirement for office areas, some buildings even require Ra90.

  • Dimming Function

The dimming function is necessary if you want to adjust brightness at different times. For instance, in the daytime, you need the light to be operated at 100% brightness, to help stay alert and concentrate. While at night time, maybe 30% or 50% brightness is more comfortable and helps employees wind down. Now, many linear light fixtures have dimmable drivers to achieve it. The popular dimming methods include 0/1 – 10V, DALI, Triac, DMX, etc. If you choose the 0 -10v dimmable linear lights, then use the 0-10v dimmer switch to control it. And if it’s Triac dimmable lighting, there are Triac dimmer switches to match.

  • Easy Connection

Linkable linear lights allow you to connect each fixture seamlessly to form a continuous running. The linkable function is pretty useful for big areas such as commercial buildings, retail stores, industrial warehouse spaces, and even some residential spaces. It saves your installation time and takes less wiring. And with the seamless connectors, it interconnects linear fixtures into rows of any desired length without visual interruption, creating a modern, structured ambiance.

What Is UGR?

UGR stands for Unified Glare Rating. It is used as a measure of glare and calculated by the glare from all visible lamps divided by the background lamination of the room. A UGR can only be calculated for an indoor lighting installation. It cannot be calculated for an exterior installation (such as street lighting) and it cannot be calculated for a light fitting on its own.

UGR Rating

UGR is an important factor to evaluate whether the office lighting or work lighting is acceptable or not. According to the IES EN12464-1 standard, for an office environment, a UGR of less than 19 is considered acceptable and a UGR of less than 16 is considered good. If an environment the UGR can be controlled by less than 10, then it’s basically considered glare-free.

LED linear lighting integrates Honeycomb anti-glare mesh to make UGR less than 16 and illuminate light evenly and glare-free. Compare to traditional linear fluorescent lights, LED linear lamps have a significant advantage to use in the office, library, and meeting rooms. The following item SLL6595A is our glare-free linear lighting with a honeycomb grid, UGR<16.

3 popular linear office lighting styles

1. Pendant Linear Office Lights

Pendant linear light is an excellent option for brightening up tables, workstations, and working spaces. They are hung on the ceiling with adjustable rope so that you can adjust the installation height depending on actual needs. They’re also the best way to illuminate the office with very high ceilings. You can use pendant linear office lights to provide focus to a specific area like a conference table or reception area.

2. Recessed Linear Office Lights

Recessed linear lighting is popular to see in the office and any commercial building areas. It’s a type of architectural lighting that is recessed into the ceiling, wall, or floor. They can be recessed mounted individually or in a continuous run that puts a line of light where you want it. Recessed linear lights are meant for more than just space efficiency. It can add a distinct sense of style, subtlety, and sophistication to a room if designed with expertise.

3. Surface-mounted Linear Office Lighting

Is your office ceiling a drywall one? or is your room have a lower ceiling? If it is, then you can go with the surface mount fixture. They are an attractive alternative to recessed linear office lighting and can give the same illumination as recessed lighting but with a pleasing aesthetic touch. Moreover, surface mounting is the easiest and low cost way to mount fixtures, as the opening is not required in surface mounting. Fixtures are exposed directly to the space, they are ideal to mount in small areas.

Which Linear Lighting Styles Should I Choose?

Among all the linear lighting styles, they vary a lot in terms of installations, wiring, connection, and configuration. So which linear lighting styles you should choose for your projects? we’ve summed up 3 aspects for your reference.

  • Budget

When we choose the lighting fixture for a project, we will always check the cost to see if it’s within budget, as it has a direct relation to the lighting effect and mounting methods. Generally speaking, recessed mounting linear lights are the most expensive selection in terms of the total cost you have to spend. As for the lamp itself, the product cost is not high, but recessed linear light requires advance precise cut-out on the ceiling to be recessed inside while surface mounting and suspended mounting are not. Therefore, besides the product cost, you need to build a drop ceiling and then do a cutout hole to accommodate the recessed lights. The added drop ceiling cost, cut-out cost, and additional labor cost might be over your budget. In order to meet the budget, ceiling-mounted or suspended linear lights are the best selection.

  • Retrofit Project or New Project?

Almost all the mounting methods can be applied to lighting projects before or during the construction period. However, when it comes to retrofit or remodel lighting projects, it has more strict installation requirements. In this situation, recessed linear lighting is not a good option for retrofit projects since it requires precise holes and extra wires. For a new project, all 3 types of linear light fixtures are suitable. Additionally, if the space is with a lower ceiling or it’s without enough height to hang the fixtures, recessed linear and surface mount linear are recommended. Suspended linear lights are ideal for projects with tall and large spaces, as they shorten the distance between fixtures and illuminated areas.

  • Interior Design Style

Now, lighting fixtures are not merely used to light up a space, their particular designed outlines also add aesthetic effect to the area. Therefore, before thinking about which linear lighting styles you need, think about what kind of interior design you want. If you’re decorating a neat and elegant interior space, recessed linear lights might be the option, as they’re flush-mounted and hidden inside the ceiling which brings a clean and compact effect. As to the ceiling-mounted and suspended fixtures, they’re more of an accent lighting or ornaments since they expose directly to the space, making the fixtures more attractive. If you want to add a focal point to your interior space, consider using bespoke decorative pendant lights. All in all, there is no absolute rule to define which linear lighting styles are better, only when they pair with your interior design style, they’re good light fixtures.
